Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Seminars

As part of the information dissemination and awareness programs about nuclear disaster, the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) has been organizing the “Nuclear Disaster Seminar”, setting various themes related to nuclear disaster. The special web page features these seminars that have been held so far.

The First Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Seminar was held on December 2, 2013 at the JRCS Headquarters. The President of JRCS, Mr. Tadateru Konoe gave the opening speech, after which Mr. Shuichi Nishijima, the Director General of the Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Resource Center, explained the role of the center. Then Dr. Makoto Akashi, Executive Director of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences and Dr. Yoichi Watanabe, Deputy Director General of the Fukushima Red Cross Hospital gave keynote presentations.

The Second Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Seminar was held on March 15, 2014 at the JRCS Headquarters. The Seminar aimed to help young people to learn the importance of thinking about what they can do if another nuclear disaster happens.

JRCS and the Japanese Red Cross College of Nursing (JRCCN) co-hosted the Third Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Seminar on October 3, 2014. The seminar was conducted under the theme of “Health Assistance for Nuclear-Disaster Affected People” and was comprised of a keynote speech by Prof. Shinji Tokonami, Institute of Radiation Emergency Medicine, Hirosaki University; a report on JRCS Health Assistance Program for Namie which has been jointly conducted by JRCS and JRCCN; and a panel discussion among people who have been first-handedly involved in assistance in the affected area. Through the seminar, the participants thought about medium- and long-term health assistance in case of possible nuclear disasters and challenges in the future.

March 2016 marked the 5th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. In regards to that, the Fourth Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Seminar was held on March 19, 2016 as part of the “Forever remembered” project by JRCS. During the seminar, the participants explored “What can we do towards the future?” through presentations and a workshop by learning about the status of Fukushima and then looking into what each of the participants should do for disaster preparedness for themselves.
