JRCS First Meeting of Radiation Emergency Medical Care Advisors (FY2015)
The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) organized the JRCS First Meeting of Radiation Emergency Medical Care Advisors and held it on July 22 and 23, 2015. The attendees were physicians and radiological technologists who work at Japanese Red Cross hospitals and are assigned as radiation emergency medical care advisors by the JRCS. They discussed development of a JRCS relief structure during a nuclear disaster.
Visit to the IFRC by Governor of Fukushima Prefecture
Mr. Masao Uchibori, Governor of Fukushima Prefecture, visited the secretariat of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Geneva, Switzerland on July 13 (Japan time: July 14), 2015, and had talks with Mr. Elhadj As Sy, Secretary General of the IFRC, and other secretariat members.
Dispatching of a Japanese Red Cross hospital physician to a training program for nuclear and radiological preparedness organized by the Italian Red Cross
From June 23 to 27, 2015, “CBRN* International Summer School: Basic Course -Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Preparedness-” was held in Italy. The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) dispatched Dr. Kiyoshi Endo, the Department Director of Neurosurgery of the Japanese Red Cross Mito Hospital, to the program. He has been assigned as a radiation emergency medical care advisor by the JRCS.
Nuclear Disaster Guidelines for Preparedness, Response and Recovery
The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) developed “Nuclear Disaster Guidelines for Preparedness, Response and Recovery” (Guidelines) and issued it on March 30, 2015.
Based on the experiences and reflections of the activities conducted soon after the TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident (Fukushima Daiichi accident) in March 2011 which followed the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and a resolution on “preparedness to respond to the humanitarian consequences of nuclear accidents” adopted at the General Assembly of the IFRC in November 2011, the JRCS has made efforts to prepare for nuclear disaster response to allow it to implement quick and appropriate humanitarian assistance activities in the event of a similar nuclear disaster in the future.
Participation in IAEA’s “Consultancy Meeting on Medical follow-up and surveillance of persons following radiation
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held the “Consultancy Meeting on Medical follow-up and surveillance of persons following radiation emergencies” from June 15 to 17, 2015 in Vienna, Austria, in which Dr. Masao Tomonaga, Honorary President of Japanese Red Cross Nagasaki Genbaku Hospital participated. He also serves as a radiation emergency medical care advisor for the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS).
A record document on Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami published by JRCS Fukushima Chapter
The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) Fukushima Chapter has published “Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami – Record Document of Fukushima –“(only in Japanese). The JRCS Fukushima Chapter, Fukushima Red Cross Hospital and Japanese Red Cross Fukushima Blood Center provided relief activities amid the confusion shortly after the onset of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident (Fukushima Daiichi accident). They are still continuing to provide assistance for revitalization in Fukushima Prefecture four years after the disaster.
Release of a digital version of the JRCS’s record document on Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
The digital version of “Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami – Complete Record Document Covering from Relief Activities to Recovery Support –“ has been released on the Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Resource Center Digital Archives. The record was issued by the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS). It includes the JRCS activities and data regarding the disaster (note: as of March 31, 2013 for financial data) from the earthquake day through December 31, 2012.
Fifth NIRS Chromosome Training Session
The Fifth NIRS (National Institute of Radilogical Sciences) Chromosome Training Session was held at the JRCS Headquarters on March 17, 2015, co-hosted by the NIRS and the JRCS.

Joint declaration between Fukushima Prefecture and the JRCS
– Work together toward revitalization and disaster preparedness in Fukushima –
The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) signed the “Joint Declaration regarding Revitalization and Disaster Preparedness” (Joint Declaration) with Fukushima Prefecture, which declared that the JRCS would continue to provide assistance activities for Fukushima citizens in collaboration with the prefecture.
