Japanese Red Cross Society signs a memorandum on metadata linkage with Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University

2017/11/28

On November 13, 2017, the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) signed a memorandum with the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University with regard to linkage of the metadata stored in the JRCS’s Digital Archives.

The JRCS is striving to enhance their preparedness to potential nuclear disasters, having established the Red Cross Nuclear Disaster Resource Center in 2013 and, as part of the effort, launching the Digital Archives in the same year.

Grounded in the experience and lessons learned from the JRCS’s relief activities in Fukushima prefecture following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (GEJET) and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant Accident, the Nuclear Disaster Resource Center’s Digital Archives has been built with information relevant to nuclear disaster response, disseminating the archived information throughout Japan and abroad via the internet.

Meanwhile, the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University, with the launch of the “Japan Disasters Digital Archive” in 2011, has been collecting information about the GEJET seeking to build repositories of the records of the disaster and its aftermath.

The data linkage this time will allow a greater number of users to share and utilize the JRCS’s archived information, thereby making it useful for planning nuclear disaster responses in the future.

The Digital Archives of the Nuclear Disaster Resource Center has also linked to the “National Diet Library of Japan Great East Japan Earthquake Archive (a.k.a. Hinagiku)” since 2013. (Please click here for Hinagiku.)

The JRCS will continue to work on nuclear disaster preparedness and risk mitigation.
